Abstract

703,392. Drying webs. DUNGLER. J. Dec. 24. 1948 [Dec. 31, 1947; Aug. 6, 1948], Nos. 33321/48 and 33322/48. Class 34(1) In a process for drying textile or paper webs &c. by exposure in a drying chamber to individual jets of superheated steam it is stated that the operating conditions are controlled to ensure such a supply of heat per unit of time that the liquid saturating the material is brought substantially immediately to its boiling point both at the surface and the interior of the material. A web 29 is carried through compartments A, B of a drying chamber 27, entering by slit 30 and leaving by slit 32. Each of the compartments A, B has upper and lower casings 33, 34 with nozzles 35, 36 supplied with superheated steam by fans 39, 40. The casings also contain heaters 37, 38 and perforated tubes 41, 42 through which steam can be blown into the casings. Exhaust manifolds 47, 48 connected to a common recuperating manifold 49 open into compartments A. B and the steam escaping through the slits 30, 32 is collected bv manifolds 50, 51 also connected to manifold 49. The manifolds 50, 51 have lips 52. 53 which press fluid-tightly against the rollers 45, 46 and the lower face of the web. Manifold 49 may be connected to a condenser (not shown), to recuperate the heat of condensation and the water which may be used to feed steam boilers or the recovered vapours may be re-injected into the supply manifold 43. Specification 703,391 is referred to.
