Class 86 [Also in Group XXVIII] In a device for dispensing a pre-determined amount of secondary liquid into the flow of a primary liquid which is being discharged under pressure, the primary liquid passes through a pressure chamber 23 defined on one side by a flexible diaphragm 14 operatively connected to a piston 16 working in a cylinder 15. The other side of the diaphragm is open to atmospheric pressure through the passage 50. When the discharge nozzle of the primary liquid is closed, the pressure in the chamber 23 rises deflecting the diaphragm 14 and causing the piston 16 to draw in a quantity of secondary liquid from the supply line 26 past the non-return valve 27. If the discharge nozzle of the primary liquid is then re-opened, the pressure in chamber 23 falls again and the diaphragm 14 and piston 16 are returned under the influence of the spring 20, forcing out the secondary liquid through conduit 28, non-return valve 36, conduit 35, visual drip feed 31, conduit 34 and valve 43 into the chamber 23 where it mixes with the flow of primary liquid. The rate at which the secondary liquid is discharged is determined by adjustment of the needle valve 40. The device is primarily intended for use with a machine for discharging a jet of washing water, whereby the initial discharge contains a proportion of detergent and is followed by detergent-free water for rinsing; further supplies of detergent being obtainable by momentarily closing and re-opening the discharge nozzle.
