Ingredient dispensing apparatus for a laundry washing machine comprises a carriage 18 movable along a series of ingredient receptacles 15 for successive register therewith, the carriage having a water supply nozzle 32 arranged to discharge into each receptacle in turn, and the receptacles communicating with a mixing tank or with the tank 1 of the washing machine. The carriage 18 has rollers 22 running on tracks 19 along which it is moved by a motor, or by a weight 28 connected to the carriage by a cord 29. To locate the carriage in register with each receptacle in turn a series of stop members 35 are provided, pivoted at 36, and adapted to engage with a shoulder or roller 37 on the carriage. An air operated trip device 38 is carried on the carriage and connected by a hose 39 to an air supply having a valve operated by a timer. The device 38 may comprise a cylinder and piston, the rod 40 of the piston being moved upwardly by air pressure to release the member 35 and downwardly again by a returning spring 41. The carriage is then free to be moved by the weight 28 to the next receptacle 15. Where the ingredient to be added is in granulated form the bottom 43 of the receptacle and a baffle plate 45 are shaped to provide passages 44, 46 leading to a manifold 4 through which water from a supply pipe 6 is delivered to a discharge pipe 5 leading to the machine drum 1. For liquid ingredients a container 47 is inserted in the receptacle, the container having a siphon tube 48 one end of which extends at 49 through a hole in the bottom 43. When water from the nozzle 32 raises the liquid level in the container above the upper end of the siphon tube 48, the contents of the container will drain completely into the manifold 4. The supply pipe 6 is connected to hot and cold water supply pipes containing valves actuated, e.g. by air-operated motors such as diaphragms in chambers, the flow of air to which is also controlled by the timer. The nozzle 32 is connected by a flexible hose 33 to the apex of a perforated conical deflector, Fig. 7 (not shown), located in the pipe 6. The carriage 18 is provided with a pointer 26 moving over an index plate 27, and a handle 23 for manually returning it to its initial position.
