Abstract

868,322. Piston-rings. CROSS MANUFACTURING CO. (1938) Ltd. March 8, 1960 [May 1, 1959], No. 14907/59. Class 122 (1). To prevent piston slap a piston-ring consists of a number of arcuate segments at least one of which has an outside diameter less than that of the piston whereby it forms a bulge to engage the cylinder wall. The ring may be formed by two segments 3, 4, the larger, 3, being concentric with the piston 1 and the smaller, 4, having an outside diameter less than that of the piston and the segment 3, both segments having the same radial thickness which is greater than the radial depth of the ring groove 2 whereby the ring acts as a bearing- ring and the smaller segment 3 being disposed with its central radius at right-angles to the gudgeon-pin axis and on the thrust side of the piston. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the ring comprises four segments of equal circumferential length and all having an outside diameter less than that of the piston.
