Abstract

912,232. Stuffing-box substitutes; pistons. VOLVO A.B. Feb. 15, 1960 [Feb. 18, 1959], No. 5359/60. Classes 122 (1) and 122 (5). A resilient guiding element for a piston is formed with a central radial flange 10, Fig. 2, which is adapted to be movably mounted in a groove between two holders and has segments 11 extending axially from it so as to constitute a resilient cylindrical bearing surface for engagement with either the piston or inner surface of the cylinder, as the case may be. As applied to the hydraulic shock-absorber shown in Fig. 1, the element is mounted with clearance in a groove provided between two holders 3, 4 at the head of the cylinder. The piston element 14, which is similar to the gland element, is mounted in a groove between the two parts 12, 13 of the piston 2. The segments may taper in thickness from the flange to their outer edges. The flexibility of the connection of the segments to the flange enables them to adjust themselves to the surface with which they have relative sliding movement, and, by rounding off the outer edges of the segments adjacent such surface, a liquid film can be built up in operation between this surface and the segments. In the case of the gland and piston arrangements shown in Fig. 1, guidance of the piston-rod and piston is provided solely by the resilient elements.
