Abstract

901,750. Piston packings. PORTER, J. M. May 24, 1960 [May 26, 1959], No. 17965/59. Class 122 (1). A composite piston ring comprises a first ring 5 of generally L-shape in crosssection to provide a peripheral flange 9 and a second ring which is of dished or frusto-conical form as shown at 6, or formed with undulations along its circumferential length as shown at 11 and is adapted to bear against and exert a radially outward pressure on the flange 9. The two top rings 2, 3 shown are compression rings and in each case the frusto-conical ring engages between the L-ring 5 and a flat ring 7. The lowermost ring 4 shown is an oil scraper ring and consists of a crimped spacer ring 11 sandwiched between two oppositely-disposed L-rings 5; the crimps in the ring 11 may have flattened or rounded crests. The flat rings 7 may be omitted or, where the piston groove permits, further flat rings 7 may be disposed above and/or below the L-rings. In the case of the oil scraper ring the axial thickness of the composite ring may be increased by replacing the flat ring 7 by a frusto-conical ring 6 or arranging such a ring above and/or below the composite ring. The elements of each composite ring are split and arranged with the splits out of alignment. The individual L-rings 5 may be formed by transversely cutting the convolutions of a strip helically rolled around a cylindrical former.
