Abstract

805,458. Piston rings. SEALED POWER CORPORATION. March 25, 1957, No. 9752/57. Class 122 (1). An expander and spacer ring for a piston ring, particularly an oil ring, assembly including a pair of thin split rings 7 comprises a circular metal strip having abutting ends 8 and corrugated to form inner crowns 1 alternating with outer crowns 2 and integrally connected therewith by upper and lower legs 3 having oppositely curved end portions and separated by slots 4 terminating at adjacent crowns, the inner crowns 1 having on each side thereof an axially extending lip 5 adapted to contact the inner peripheries of the rings 7. The lips 5 are inclined inwardly so that the rings 7 in addition to being expanded into contact with the cylinder wall 9 are also pressed against the sides of the ring groove 10. Oil passing through the slots 4 is drained through an outlet 11 leading from the bottom of the groove 10 to the interior of the piston 8.
