Abstract

1,122,974. Piston rings. CORDS PISTON RING CO. Ltd. 14 July, 1967 [5 Aug., 1966], No. 35269/66. Heading F2T. In a piston ring assembly comprising split rings 3, 4 axially separated by and urged radially outwards by an expander-spacer split ring 2, the ring 2 is corrugated axially to provide top and bottom crests 5 and 6 interconnected by axial web portions 7 and has axially extending end portions 7<SP>1</SP>, which abut when the ring is compressed in use. Lugs 8 formed on the crests 5 and 6 engage the split rings 3 and 4 to urge them against the cylinder wall 11, the rings being of frusto-conical form before assembly in the piston ring groove 10. The expanderspacer ring is formed from stainless steel strip which is cut along one edge to define projections 16 and corrugated. The projections are bent along the lines 19 to form the lugs 8 and the strip is then cut to length and finally bent into a ring which may then be passed between a pair of grinding tools to finish the outer edges of the lugs 8.
