995,409. Pipe joints. CORNING GLASS WORKS. May 20, 1964 [May 21, 1963], No. 20849/64. Heading F2G. A coupling for joining two pipe sections 11, 12, particularly of glass, comprises means for compressing an elastic annular gasket 14 radially with respect to the pipe sections, said gasket having an annular inwardly-projecting rib 16 extending between the opposed ends of the pipe sections which is flanked on either side by at least one annular inwardly-projecting rib 17 or 18 slanted towards the first rip. In the embodiment shown, the gasket 14, preferably of butadiene-acrylnitrile synthetic rubber, is compressed by a stainles steel slotted band 13. As a result, the sawtooth ribbed surfaces 17, 18 are deflected towards the central rib 16 thereby drawing the pipe ends in endwise abutment against said rib, which is clad in a protective liner of polytetrafluoroethylene. The sawtooth slanted ribs may be of triangular section either having proximal faces with respect to the central rib, as well as distal faces, inclined at acute angles to the pipe axis as shown or having proximal faces inclined at obtuse angles to the pipe axis as illustrated in a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown). Alternatively, the ribs may be of curved section with the average slope of the proximal face with respect to the central rib exceeding that of the distal face.
