Abstract

946,068. Universal joints. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 29, 1962 [Nov. 8, 1961], No. 40003/61. Heading F2U. A universal joint comprises a sleeve 3 extending between shaft fittings 1 and consisting of a closely woven braid of resilient filaments of steel, phosphor bronze, berylliumcopper or nylon. Each fitting 1 has a flange 2 penetrating into the sleeve to which it is clamped by a disc 4 which is secured by a nut 7. The disc and flange have a co-operating annular ridge 9 and groove 8 trapping a portion of the braid therebetween. The disc 4 may be formed with a skirt (not shown) extending along the outside of the sleeve to protect its end portions. The braid is woven in a herring- bone pattern. In a modification the flanges are of greater diameter than the sleeve and each has a groove in which an end of the sleeve is secured by an adhesive.
