Abstract

940,009. Pipe joints. A. O. SMITH CORPORATION. Feb. 22, 1962 [March 2, 1961], No. 6908/62. Heading F2G. In a joint for coupling opposed tubular members 1, 2, the members each comprise radially extending, annular shoulder 3 disposed at its ends, an annular groove 4 adjacent the shoulder 3, and a ring member 8 provided with a gap in its periphery, housed within the groove 4 and also abutting the rear face of shoulder 3. A split coupling 18 is clamped in substantially line contact on ring members 8, a gasket 21 sealing the annular space between the periphery of the shoulder and the internal periphery of the coupling 18. The ring members 8, therefore, distribute the line force over the rear faces of shoulder 3. The ring members 8 may be of metal and the pipes of fibre reinforced synthetic resin. The reinforcement may be in the form of long strands, tape, fabric or matting which may comprise glass fibre, synthetic materials or vegetable or metallic fibres.
