In a plastic pipe coupling, an annular coupling member 17, Fig. 1, surrounds at least one pipe end 10 to form an annular space therebetween for a plastic wedge-shaped ring 20, and an adhesive 25 is applied between the mating surfaces of the pipe and the ring and between the ring and an O-ring 16, which is axially spaced from the end faces of the pipe and ring. A coldcuring epoxy, polyurethane or phenolic resin may be used. The ring 20, Fig. 5, is provided with expansion slots 24 and grooves 26 which permit the escape of excess adhesive. In another embodiment, the pipe ends abut against an internal annular flange. A further embodiment, Fig. 3, has two coupling members 50, 58, each provided with a flange 62, 63 clamped by detachable members 64, 65, which enclose a fluid tight packing 67. In Fig. 4, the pipe 70 and coupling member 76 are composite members having outer layers 72, 77 of fibre glass reinforcing impregnated with a thermosetting resin e.g. an epoxy, polyester or phenolic composition and inner layers 73, 78 of rigid vinyl, the outer layer being stripped from the inner layer for a short distance at the tube ends and the coupling member being correspondingly stepped, the wedge members 20 being secured by adhesive. A further embodiment Fig. 6, has a steel coupling member 98 having an end face 92 flush with the pipe end. An annular liner 92, which may be of the same material as the pipe, covers the end face 92 and groove 94 and a gasket 93 is provided. The flange 100 may be part of a pipe, valve or a steel fitting.
