735,660. Caps for resisting fluid pressure. GRATZMULLER, J. L. Jan. 20, 1953 [Jan. 23, 1952], No. 1635/53. Class 123 (1). [Also in Group XXVIII] A fluid-tight joint is formed between two interfitting tubular or partly tubular members such as a cylindrical pressure-fluid container 10 and a screw cap 11, by providing an annular lip 17 on the cylinder adapted to engage and be bent inwardly by a conical surface 14 on the cap. The lip has a rectangular cross-section in a radial plane, and its axial length is greater than its radial thickness but less than that of an annular part 16 the end of which by engaging a flat surface 15 on the cap limits the radial distortion of the lip. Fluid escaping between the surface 15 and the contacting surface on the part 16 will enter a groove 18 and press the lip 17 against the surface 14. The lip is intended to retain some of its elasticity after distortion. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the cap is bolted to the cylinder. Specification 9916/07, [Class 99], is referred to.
