Abstract

There is disclosed a decorator's aid comprising a blank tail nut 6 or the combination of a tail nut and a blanking insert. The nut 6 closes off a radiator valve 2 after removal of a radiator to facilitate decoration.

Description

DECORATOR'S AID FIELD OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to aids for decorators.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION One of the problems faced by an interior decorator, is how to decorate behind a radiator which is usually fitted a mere few inches from a wall. There have been paint brushes designed for such situations, but they are not entirely satisfactory and do not help the decorator hang paper behind a radiator. By far the best thing to do is to remove the radiator. However that often raises another problem. The radiator valves through which a radiator is connected to the central heating circuit, are seldom operated and over a period of years often fur up or become otherwise coated or corroded with the result that they will not shut off completely. Having removed the radiator the decorator is often faced with valves leaking dirty fluid (which is sometimes hot) over the floor or carpet.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION In accordance with the invention, there is provided a decorator's aid comprising a blank tail nut or the combination of a tail nut and a blanking insert.
Having removed the radiator, the decorator can fit the blank tail nut to a leaking (or potentially leaking valve), hence avoiding the problem.
The aid preferably includes a resilient seal to facilitate closing the blank off.
The invention also includes a method of decorating including the steps of closing the valves of a radiator, removing the radiator, and fitting one or both valves with this decorator's aid.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING One embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing in which the single Figure is a side elevation of a radiator valve to which is fitted a blank tail nut embodying the invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING Referring to the drawing, a radiator valve 2 is normally connected to a radiator (not shown) at A. In order to decorate behind the radiator, the valve has been closed by operation of the spindle 4 and the radiator has been removed. The valve (not shown) at the other side of the radiator has similarly been closed.
In case one of the valves leaks, or perhaps just for safety's sake, a blank tail nut 6 is fitted to the valve sealing it against leaks. PTFE tape may be used in the thread to seal the blank tail nut 6 to the valve 2. In an alternative, a resilient washer or disc (often with a drop of sealant or grease) is placed inside the blank tail nut to seal it to the valve 2.
In another embodiment, a standard tail nut is blanked off by a disc of suitable dimensions (not shown). In this example, the disc may itself be of resilient material so as to seal with the valve. In alternatives, the disc may be a composite of rigid material and resilient material, or two discs may be provided, one rigid and the other resilient.
In order to fit the many British radiator valves the blank tail nut 2 has a standard 3/4" BSP thread, but the technology is adapted to different widths and tread types.
