Abstract
1326445 Pipe couplings; pipe stoppers SGE RESEARCH PTY Ltd 5 Nov 1970 [7 Nov 1969] 52577/70 Headings F2G and F2P In a pipe or rod coupling or a tube stopper, a coupling member comprises a cylindrical body having a screw-threaded portion and two coaxial bore portions of different diameters forming a shoulder which abuts a resilient annular clip carried in a groove in the pipe or rod. The coupling may be used to couple glass tubes 1, 2 via a fluid-tight resilient sealing washer 17, as shown in Fig. 1. Coupling members 4, 5, which may be of stainless steel, are slidable on the tubes 1, 2 and have counterbored portions in the shanks 6, 8 to form shoulders 11, 12. The clips 15, 16, retained in grooves 13, 14 in the glass tubes, abut the shoulders 11, 12 when the coupling members are screwed together. A shoulder may be provided on the tubes to limit the axial movement of each coupling member back along the tube. The shoulder may be a further clip retained in a groove in the tube. The end of a tubular glass vessel 1 may be sealed by a resilient blank washer (21) which replaces the washer 17 and is deformed by a cap (18) (Fig. 2, not shown) which replaces the coupling member 5. In a modification, the cap (18) has a small diameter axial bore to permit the passage of a hyperdermic needle which punctures the washer to connect with the bore of the vessel 1. Upon removal of the needle the puncture hole collapses and is sealed due to the resilience of the washer material.
