Abstract
1282763 Hypodermic syringes ORGANON LABORATORIES Ltd 29 Oct 1969 [12 Nov 1968] 52944/69 Heading A5R A hypodermic syringe for withdrawing body fluids consists of a tube 1 sealed at one end by a closure 2 made at least partially of a resilient material, a hollow needle 4 passing through said closure, one end of said needle being in contact with a piston 7 prior to use, and a piston moving device which can be connected to the piston via socket 11. A depression 3 is formed on the inner face of closure 2 and a concave depression is formed on the opposed surface of the piston 7. The end of tube 1 remote from the needle is fitted with a cap 9 having a diaphragm 10 which may easily be penetrated by a piston rod. The needle is protected by a cover 17 prior to use. After withdrawing fluid by drawing back the piston 7, the needle is withdrawn until its inner end is at the uppermost point of depression 3, the piston is then moved towards the needle while holding the syringe vertically until any gas present has been forced out and the needle is then withdrawn completely. The resilient closure 2 then seals the interior of the syringe, providing a sealed container for the body fluids which may be, for example, centrifuged. An anticoagulant or antiseptic substance may be placed between the piston and the closure of the syringe. The tube 1 may be disposable and is preferably of transparent plastics material.
