Abstract
1,059,257. Liquid withdrawing devices. BECTON DICKINSON & CO. Dec. 31, 1965 [June 24, 1965], No. 55428/65. Heading ASR. [Also in Division F1] An assembly for collecting blood or other fluid comprises a container 12 having a penetrable self-sealing stopper 18, a holder 22, and a cannula 24 pointed at both ends secured in the holder such that it penetrates the stopper and enters the container, in which a vacuum is maintained when the container is pushed fully home within the holder. The holder is provided with ribs 46 to grip the stopper and hold the con- :ainer at an appropriate position within the holder. A circumferentially extending rib 48 within the holder serves is an indicator of the position of the end of he cannula in the stopper when the top of the stopper is aligned with t. To withdraw blood, end 26 of the cannula s inserted into a vein, end 32 of the cannula being embedded in the stopper. The container s then pushed to its fullest extent into the holder. When full, it may be retracted to the position at which the top of the stopper is in alignment with rib 48 or it may be entirely withdrawn from the holder, followed by withdrawal of end 26 of the cannula from the vein. The assembly, or parts thereof, may be packed in sterile packages. The container and holder are generally transparent. The latter may be made of polypropylene. The stopper may be made of elastomeric material. The cannula may be secured in the holder by bonding material 36, e.g. epoxy resin and by interlock provided by recesses 38 in passage 34 of the holder.
