Abstract
1378603 Blood sampling devices BECTON DICKINSON & CO 2 May 1973 [29 June 1972] 20921/73 Heading A5R Blood . sampling device: A needle assembly 20 in a blood sampling device comprises housing 21, a cannula 22 extending from the housing 21 for penetration into a blood vessel 48, a second cannula 23 extending from the opposite end of the housing 21 and adapted to be coupled in communication with the interior of an evacuated container 45, a passage between the tips of the cannulae 22, 23 and a resilient elastomeric valve member 30 normally closing the passage but adapted to respond to a reduction in pressure in the cannula 23, to deform and automatically open the passage until the pressuure in the cannula 23 rises to a predetermined value and automatically closes the passage, thereby forming a non- return valve. The housing 21 includes a portion 33 having a tapered bore and a portion 24 having a complementary shape, the cannulae 22, 23 being adhesively secured to the portions 24, 33 respectively. The portion 33 has a threaded surface 37 for engagement with a holder 44 for the container 45 which has a resilient pierceable stopper 47. The needle assembly 20 is packaged in a sealed sterile capsule (41), Fig. 1, (not shown) made in two parts (42, 43) which are bound together by a band (144). Valve members: The valve member 30 is an elastomeric sleeve engaging the cannula 22 and having a closed end. One or more self-sealing slits 32 are formed in it and act as the non- return valve, opening only when the evacuated container 45 is coupled in to increase the pressure differential across the slits 32. In an alternative embodiment, the valve member (30a), Fig. 12, (not shown) is a thin elastomeric disc held against the cannula (22a) by castellations (50) and forming a seal with arris defined by grooves (51) in the forward portion of the housing (21a). In a second alternative embodiment, an aperture (53), Fig. 19, (not shown) is formed in the side of the cannula (22b) and an elastomeric sleeve (54) is fitted over the aperture (53). The end of the sleeve (54) and that of the cannula (22b) are sealed by an adhesive. In a third alternative embodiment, a double pointed cannula (22c), Fig. 25, (not shown) is sealed near its middle by a crimp (55) and an aperture (56) formed in the upper part of the cannula (22c) which is then enclosed by an elastomeric sleeve (58) to form the non-return valve.
