Abstract

1,132,197. Blood sampling apparatus. BECTON DICKINSON & CO. 19 June, 1967 [18 Aug., 1966], No. 28193/67. Heading A5R. A valve device, for use with apparatus for collecting multiple samples of a body liquid, comprises a cannula 20 mounted so that both its ends 21, 21' project from a holder member 70, the end 21' being arranged for making a body puncture and the end 21 having a valve closure member 30 mounted on it and normally closing the passage through the cannula, the closure member being movable by the application of a pierceable plug against the end of the cannula to open the passage for liquid flow and moving back again to close the passage on removal of the plug. As shown, the valve device is screw-threaded into a collection tube holder 40, the cannula 20 has a side opening 31, and an elastomeric sleeve 30 normally closes the opening but may be compressed by moving the pierceable self-sealing plug of an evacuated collection tube 50 upwards over the cannula end so that the liquid sample is able to flow through the cannula for collection (see also Figures 11-13, not shown). The end 21 of the cannula adjacent the side opening 31 is closed with a plug (35) of plastics, latex, wax, or metal material, or by crimping, soldering, brazing, or welding. The cannula end 21 may be crimped at an angle (Figure 8, not shown), or widened (Figure 5, not shown) in which case the closure sleeve 30 may be formed with internally tapered ends (37) (Figure 7, not shown). The elastomeric sleeve 30 may extend over the pointed end 21 of the cannula.
