Abstract

1,002,472. Tube couplings. BOEING CO. Feb. 28, 1963, No. 8112/63. Heading F2G. A tube fitting comprises a pair of tube members A of like material, a sleeve 11 of a material similar to that of the tubes and having the end portions thereof engaged over an end portion of each of the tubes, and a pair of rings 2 forcibly engaged over the sleeve end portions, the outer peripheral surfaces of each of the sleeve end portions being tapered slightly inwardly towards the respective sleeve ends. The sleeve or the tubes have serrations 12 that are depressed into the tube or the sleeve. As shown, the sleeve 11, e.g. of stainless steel, has a central, screw-threaded portion 10 which constitutes a limit stop for the rings 2 which are forced inwardly by an hydraulic device acting on opposite shoulders 20 of the rings. A nut 3 is used to force the rings away from the portion 10 when disconnection of the fitting is desired. The inside of the sleeve, or the tubes, are formed with axially spaced grooves 12 having sharp edges, and an annular groove 14 receives a split, spring ring 4 which serves as a spacer and stop between the ends of the tubes; the latter flare into an annular groove 16. The rings 2 have an internal sharp-edged groove 21 into which material of the sleeve is deformed. In modifications, (a) the tubes and sleeve have interengaging shoulders, and (b) the sleeve 11 has a fixed stop ring. The fitting may be in the form of an elbow, tee or cross.
