Abstract

849,130. Piston packing. CROSS MANUFACTURING CO. (1938) Ltd. July 1, 1958, No. 21031/58. Class 122 (1). A piston 3 has annular grooves 4 each containing a single split packing-ring 1 of substantially rectangular section and of dished shape when unstressed, the width z of the groove being substantially equal to the thickness y of the ring with slight clearance so that when the ring is inserted therein it is resiliently flattened and bears at its inner and outer edges 6 and 7 against the sides of the groove. The radial width x of the ring is preferably at least three times its thickness y and substantially equal to the depth u of the groove. The lands 8 of the grooves may be cylindrical or, as shown in Fig. 8, frusto-conical. Specification 794,889 is referred to.
