Abstract

899,229. Piston packing. GOETZEWERKE F. GOETZE A.G. Oct. 13, 1959 [Nov. 28, 1958], No. 34716/59. Class 122 (1). Piston packing comprises two sealing rings 2, 3, Fig. 1, which act independently of each other at all, or substantially all, points around the periphery and are pressed axially against the sides of the groove 5 and radially outwards by a helically-coiled spring 4 which has sufficient play in the axial direction to allow the spring to follow unequal radial movements of the rings without lifting from either ring. The rings may be of rectangular cross-section as shown in Fig. 1 with tapered faces to provide support for the spring 4 or they may be of circular crosssection with similarly tapered support faces. If desired, the rings may have tabs directed radially inwards for the support of the spring. In another form the spring may be of triangular cross-section as shown in Fig. 5. Axial play of the spring in the arrangement shown in Fig. 6 is determined by an additional ring 13 and recess 14 in the flank of the groove 5. If desired, the parts of the packing may be held together initially by an adhesive which subsequently dissolves away during operation. In an alternative construction, the two rings and the spring are formed from a single length of wire, the rings being bent from the two ends of the central helically-wound part.
