Abstract

519,088. Pistons; alloys. NICOLLE, A. V., WHITE, P.; and AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. Sept. 23, 1938, No. 27845. [Class 122 (i)] [Also in Group II] A piston a, particularly for an internal combustion engine, is encircled by a thin strip b of material having a coefficient of expansion less than that of the piston, so that expansion of the latter in a radial direction is opposed by the strip and reduced to substantially the same as that of the cylinder block. The strip may extend over the whole length or over one or more portions of the length of the piston, and it preferably comprises wire of circular or partcircular cross-section wound in a plurality of turns about the piston. The thickness, strength, and pitch of the wire, and the thickness of the piston skirt, may each be constant or varied. The piston may be formed of a silicon aluminium alloy, and the wire of steel, iron, or nickel-iron, which may be tinned or oxidized. A suitable alloy for the piston contains 14 per cent. silicon, 2 per cent. nickel, 1 per cent, magnesium, 9 per cent. copper, the remainder being aluminium. The piston skirt may be roughened to receive the wire, and various means for anchoring the ends of the wire to the piston are described and illustrated in the Specification.
