Abstract
866,657. Purifying charge; two-stroke and four-stroke engines. AMERICAN BRAKE SHOE CO. July 31, 1959, No. 26323/59. Addition to 733,743. Class 7(2). A rotary filter 67 Fig. 1, driven by the engine crank-shaft or by a multi-speed electric motor (Fig. 2, no shown) through gearing is mounted in a chamber 35 receiving air from crank-cases Cl C2 via one-way valve: 47, 51, the filtered air now free from entrained oil, passing to air intake valves 61, 62 of four-stroke engine cylinders. A vane oil pump 30 driven by the crank-shaft is provided in a sump having flap valve connections with the crank-cases C1, C2, which have one-way air intake valves 42, 43. In a modification, an individual rotary filter is provided inside each crank-case which feeds the air intake of its own cylinder only. In a further modification, a rotary filter driven by an electric motor is located internally or externally of the crank-case of a single cylinder two-stroke engine to purify the engine charge air as it leaves the crank-case. Any of the forms of rotary filter described in the parent Specification may be used.
