866,629. Pipe joints. STEWARTS & LLOYDS Ltd. Nov. 19, 1959 [Jan. 14, 1959], No. 1366/59. Class 99(1). A quick-action, releasable pipe joint comprises pipes 4, 5 each having a number of outwardly-extending projections 6, a clamping ring 14 of inner diameter greater than that of the projections and having opposed pairs of inward projections 17 capable of passing longitudinally between the projections 6 for assembly therewith, and means 18 for forcing circular movement of the ring relative to the pipe ends to effect simultaneous wedging engagement on the projections 6 on the pipes ends to bring the latter together to effect the joint, each of the projections 6 having wedge formations 6a tapering towards each end of the projection so that the clamping effect of the ring can be effected by moving the ring in either circumferential direction about the pipes axes. As shown, the projections 6, which may be formed integral with the pipes or as parts of collars 7 secured to the pipes, have complementary spigots and sockets 9, 10 to maintain alignment of the pipes. After rotation of the ring 14, and to protect the joint against sudden loosening a wedge plate 19 which can be locked by a pin against withdrawal is driven between the rim parts 17 and the associated pipe end. A sealing ring 11 in an annular socket 12 in one of the pipe ends is compressed by an annular projection 13 on the other pipe end.
