Abstract

926,215. Pipe couplings. ROLLINAPLAST A.G. Nov. 7, 1961 [Nov. 9, 1960], No. 39876/61. Class 99(1). A disengageable coupling comprises first and second pipes 1, 2 of a plastic, the pipe 1 having a groove 7 in which an annular resilient means 6 is located and the pipe 2 being provided with a shoulder 13 which when the pipes are coupled together is engaged by the resilient means to prevent the pipes separating. An axially moveable, bush-like, release member 8 is slidable between the pipes and is adapted to urge the resilient means into the groove and out of engagement with the shoulder so that the latter can be withdrawn past the resilient means and the pipes separated. As shown, an expandible, split ring 6 of polyvinyl chloride is fitted into the groove 7 in the socket 3 of pipe 1, the ring being backed by an insert 11 of sponge rubber, and is engageable by a sleeve 8 of polyethylene slidable on the pipe 2. By moving the sleeve in the direction of arrow B the ring is expanded to allow insertion of the pipe 2 into the socket and by movement of the sleeve in the opposite direction the ring is allowed to contract to engage behind the shoulder 13 on the pipe 2. The socket may have a groove 5 in which is disposed a sealing ring 10 of circular cross-section, or a lip-type packing. The shoulder 13 may be constituted by a ring of angle cross-section inserted in a recess in the thickened portion 4 of the pipe 2. The ends of the ring 6 and sleeve 8 may be chamfered as shown, or provided with convex surfaces of equal radii.
