Abstract

930,890. Pipe joints. AUTOMATIC SPRINKLER CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Dec 11, 1961, No. 44256/61. Class 99(1). A pipe end 19 with an external circumferential groove 21 is secured in a tubular coupling 10 having in its inner wall spaced annular channels 15, 17 each having a side wall 25, 28, the bottom of the channel 15 being tapered as shown toward its side wall 25 and a contractile split ring 11 being slidably received in the channel 15 and adapted to seat itself in the pipe groove 21. Axial forces tending to separate pipe and coupling move the pipe and ring thereon towards and to abut the side wall 25, the taper forcing the ring into close engagement with the groove 21. The ring 11 has outturned ends 23 engaging in slots 23, Fig. 2, in the coupling and is adapted to be expanded to the position shown and moved axially of the coupling into the deepest part of the channel 15 for uncoupling the joint. A flanged gasket 13 is seated in the other channel 17 to effect a liquid tight seal between coupling and pipe and bears against the channel wall 28. The arrangement is such that when the ring 11 has been fixed against the side wall 25, the wedging action of the ring on the pipe and coupling is limited to a predetermined maximum pressure. The coupling and pipe may be made of light-weight relatively soft materials such as aluminium or plastic material.
