Abstract

977,205. Pipe joints. A. D. LINEWEBER. May 15, 1962, No. 18694/62. Heading F2G. Also in Divisions B8 and E2. In a joint between two axially aligned, flanged, tubular members 11, 12 having an elastic sealing ring 20 interposed between the flanges 16, 17 and including a detachable ring consisting of two segments 27 and provided with an annular channel 43 for reception of the spaced flanges which are of frusto-conical configuration, the ring 20 is of Y-shaped crosssection and has a portion disposed between the members and engaging the walls of the members and also an outwardly tapered rib 22 disposed between opposed surfaces of the spaced flanges, the rib having opposite side surface in contact with the flanges adjacent the junction of the rib and body portions of the ring. The rib and flanges have radial dimensions substantially less than the radial dimensions of the channel 43 to provide a space within the channel for accommodating the outer portion 46 of the rib when the rib is urged outwardly under the influence of fluid pressure acting upon the sealing ring within the tubular members. The segments of the ring are contracted by a toggle device to draw the flanges 16, 17 towards one another, and the body portion of the sealing ring is chamfered to form marginal lips 25 which are forced by fluid pressure on to the walls of the members 11, 12.
