Abstract

1,168,040. Pipe couplings; joint-making packing. HEPWORTH IRON CO. Ltd. 13 Sept., 1968, No. 43565/68. Headings F2B, F2G and F2P. In a socket 4, an inturned lip 9 defines an inwardly-facing annular recess 6 which houses a resilient sealing ring 7, e.g. of natural or synthetic rubber, having an axial length less than the axial length of the recess and a sealing head 10 projecting radially inwards alongside the side of an incompressible locking ring 8 facing the inner end of the recess; there is an incompressible blocking ring 13, between the ring 8 and the lip 9, which preferably is integral with the ring 8. The back 18 of the sealing head may, as shown, be rounded to assist rolling of the head into the space 15 upon insertion of a spigot pipe into the socket; the latter may be provided at one end of a synthetic plastics pipe or a sleeve or the sleeve may have a socket, at each end thereof. In a modification, the end portion of a pipe is fitted with an external sleeve of synthetic plastics material prior to expanding the pipe end to form the socket and turning in the lip.
