Abstract
1,014,364. Spigot and socket joints; jointmaking packing. HALBERGERHUTTE G.m.b.H. April 25, 1963, No. 16349/63. Headings F2B and F2G. A spigot and socket joint comprises a socket member 2, the inner surface of which includes a generally cylindrical portion 6 followed by a portion 7 widening conically towards the base of the socket and a spigot member 1 having a generally cylindrical end portion. A sealing ring 3 is provided and comprises a retaining portion 4 and a sealing portion 5. The dimensions of the sealing ring 3 are such that after its insertion into the socket member the sealing portion 5 lies approximately against the transition from the cylindrical 6 to the conical 7 portions and after insertion of the spigot member into the socket member the sealing portion of the sealing ring is urged at least partly into engagement with the conically widening portion 7. The retaining portion is of hard rubber and the sealing portion of softer rubber. In a modification the retaining portion of the sealing ring engages the outer end face of the socket member and is formed with a cylindrical portion of the sealing portion material between the retaining portion and the sealing portion (Fig. 4, not shown). The dimensions of the co-operating parts of the joint are given as percentages of the maximum radial thickness of the sealing portion of the sealing ring.
