1,144,357. Pipe couplings; clayware pipes. HEPWORTH IRON CO. Ltd. 19 Dec., 1967 [20 Sept., 1966], No. 41903/66. Headings F2G and F2P. A coupling socket for a spigot-and-socket pipe joint includes an inwardly-facing, annular recess 3 and a resilient sealing ring 4 U-shaped in cross-section; the arms 5 of the U extend to the corners 6 between the sides 7 and back 8 of the recess and the rounded base 9 of the U protrudes inwards beyond the inner periphery 10 of the socket. The socket may form part of a synthetic plastics or clayware pipe, one end of a synthetic plastics sleeve, the other end of which is secured to one end of a pipe length, or, alternatively, both ends of a sleeve, when the sockets are separated by an inward flange or spaced projections. A junction piece may have a socket at one or both ends of the main pipe portion thereof and at the end of the branch pipe portion.
