Abstract

730,339. Pipe joints. VICKERS-ARMSTRONGS, Ltd., and MOBSBY, P. G. Feb. 23, 1954 [April 9, 1953], No. 9659/53. Class 99 (1). A joint for connecting hollow cylindrical members 13, 14 comprises a socket ring 11 having an internal annular groove 15 in which a split ring 17 can be wholly accommodated, a spigot ring 10 provided with an external annular groove 16 which is aligned with the groove 15 when the rings 10, 11 are assembled together, and a series of screws 21 mounted in radially-extending screw-threaded holes in the wall of the ring 11. The screws 21 engage the ring 17 at intervals around its periphery and force the ring partially out of the groove 15 and into the groove 16 to lock the rings 10, 11 together. The groove 16 may have a chamfered side 19 which co-operates with a corresponding chamfer 18 on the ring 17 to enable a wedging action to be obtained when the ring is projected into the groove. Relative rotation between the rings 10, 11 may be prevented by providing inwardly directed dowels 22 on the ring 11 and for engaging in longitudinal, open-ended slots 23 in the ring 10. In a modification, a split torsion ring 25, Fig. 6, substantially cylindrical in shape and held at 28 between the rings 10, 11 is twisted to engage in the groove 27 of the ring 10.
