Abstract

827,353. Joint-making packing. UNITED STATES PIPE & FOUNDRY CO. March 27, 1958 [April 1, 1957], No. 9852/58. Addition to 812,519. Class 122 (3). [Also in Group XXVIII] An annular gasket, Fig. 8, of rubber or synthetic plastic of 50 to 70 Shore "A" durometer hardness, for a spigot and socket pipe joint, and having a greater axial than radial dimension, comprises two axial parts one of which has a greater radial thickness than the other, the inside diameter of the gasket tapering from a maximum on the thinner part to a minimum on the thicker part, and a groove 18 in the outside wall of the thinner part cooperating with a locking ridge formed in the socket for preventing axial movement of the gasket; alternatively, the ridge is formed on the gasket and the corresponding groove in the socket. The resiliency of the thicker portion may be increased by providing therein (a) a continuous hole, (b) a series of spaced apart axial holes 28, Fig. 10, (c) a continuous slot 35, Fig. 12, the internal wall of the gasket being also provided with annular ridges 29, and (d) spaced-apart lips 31, 32, Fig. 14, separated at their juncture by an annular slot 35.
