Abstract

864,927. Bearings. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. Dec. 30, 1957 [Dec. 28, 1956], No. 39459/56. Class 12 (1). A part spherical socket depression 2 in an electric gramophone motor frame 2, which may be closed at the bottom as shown in chain dotted lines to serve as a thrust bearing or be open as shown to act as a through bearing accommoda,tes a part spherical phosphor bronze bearing element 5 which is porous and is centrally bored to receive the journal part 6 of an armature shaft 6 the element 5 being urged within the socket 2 by means of a spring steel clip 7 of strip form. The latter, having a central opening 8 to clear the shaft 6, has a socket depression 9 to receive the upper end of the bearing element 5. At each side of the socket depression 9 the clip is corrugated, the two outer ends being sprung beneath shoulders 11 on pressedin portions 12 of the frame 1 to retain the bearing element in position. The spherical outer surface of the element 5 ensures ready alignment when the shaft 6 is fitted and allows the bearing to yield laterally under shock loads. An oil pad 13 encircles the bearing element 5.
