Abstract
928,880. Bearings. W. KOHLHAGEN. March 27, 1962 [April 24, 1961], No. 11727/62. Class 12 (1). [Also in Group XXII] In order to facilitate the charging of lubricant into a bearing assembly so as to provide lifelong lubrication of a shaft of an electric motor, for example, a lubricant-retaining member 66 is provided with a breather-vent 68 which is large enough to allow escape of air therefrom when the lubricant is being charged into the bearing. In an embodiment, an electric motor 10, having a core 18, has a shaft 39 supported radially and axially therein by a journal bearing 40 and a nylon &c. thrust-washer 58 respectively and, when assembled, has a reservoir g, Fig. 2, formed between inserts 42, 44, which are press-fitted into a bore 46 of the core 18 and has the lubricant-retaining member 66 held in position, by crimping for example, at one end of the bearing. In charging the lubricant into the bearing assembly, the lubricant is forced through a bore 48 of the insert 42 and into the reservoir g from where it passes, via an annular space 50 between the shaft 34 and the bearing 40, to a reservoir 62 and between the faces 54, 56 of the shaft and the thrust-washer 58. A vent 72, Fig. 4, of the thrust-washer 58 allows passage of lubricant to a chamber 76 formed by the member 66 and air is permitted to escape through the vent 68 therein. The shaft is then forced into the assembled position and surplus lubricant also escapes through the vent 68.
