Abstract
779,419. Bearings. SOULARD, C. G. June 2, 1955 [June 4, 1954; April 22, 1955], No. 15805/55. Class 12 (1). A shaft 1 has a journal comprising a cylindrical portion 2 and conical end portions 3, 4 containing lubricant channels 7, 8 through which oil is conveyed by centrifugal force to central lubricant channels 11. The bearing comprises an upper half 15 and lower half 14 in which circumferential channels 31 are formed for collecting lubricant from the channels 11 and delivering it to an outlet channel 30. Oil is supplied through inlets 24 to the spaces 27 between the ends of the bearing and sealing rings 18. In a modification, a part spherical bearing member 33 is secured to a shaft 1a and channels 39, 40 in the bearing cap 15a form a closed circuit for oil flowing in the direction of the arrows. Various forms of grooves are shown in Figs. 8 ... 11. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 12, oil is supplied through passages 55 in the top cap and is exhausted through a passage 59 in the housing beneath the bearing. In a further modification, a body 81, 82 is rotatably supported on a fixed spindle 71 by part spherical bearings 86... 89, engaging part spherical members on the spindle 71. Oil flows in a closed circuit through grooves 38i and passages 100, 84 and 99.
