Abstract

898,877. Bearings; lubricating systems. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. (Ford Motor Co.). Sept. 7, 1959, No. 30434/59. Classes 12 (1) and 12(3). A bearing comprises a journal 11 rotatable in a sleeve 16, means for ensuring the flow of lubricant from a reservoir 17 to the surfaces of the journal and sleeve, and means 24 mounted on the journal for returning the lubricant to the reservoir. The sleeve 16 of sintered bronze is a press-fit in a housing 13 secured by bolts 15 to a dynamo-electric machine. The sleeve is retained by a cap 21. Reservoirs 17 are formed in the sleeve and the end of the housing and are filled with a cellulose material impregnated with the same lubricant as is the sleeve. A disc 24 which is a press-fit on the journal 11 rotates with the journal to cause lubricant flowing along the bearing surfaces to be flung outwardly and thus returned to the reservoirs. The reservoirs 17 may be formed in the outer surface of the sleeve or in corrugations formed in the housing 13. In a further modification, the sleeve 16, Fig. 6, is of wrought material and contains reservoirs communicating with the bearing surfaces by passages 28, the passages and reservoirs being limited to the portion of the sleeve carrying the lesser working pressures. This bearing may also be modified to have the reservoirs in the surface of the sleeve or in housing corrugations 13, Fig. 9.
