Abstract

863,260. Pipe joints. JOHN THOMPSON WATER TUBE BOILERS Ltd. March 13, 1957 [March 13, 1956], No. 7881/56. Class 99(1). In a flexible joint for ducting, a laminated restraining member 8 extends axially through a seamless metal bellows 1, relative to which it is secured at both ends. The bellows 1 is formed with cylindrical rims 2, 3 at its ends which are welded to the inner peripheries of end rings 4, 5 which in turn are welded to opposed lengths of ducting 6, 7. The restraining member 8 is of sufficient width to be a loose fit in the corrugations of the bellows and is welded at its ends for a short distance to rings 4, 5. Metal plates 10 are welded as struts on each side of the plate 8 to the rings 4, 5. Cylindrical covers 11, 12 secured to the end rings 4, 5 respectively, are connected at 11c, 12c to a flexible metal annulus 13, as described in Specification 863,261, to provide a coupling which permits flexing of the joint but precludes torsional movement. The annulus may be provided with an additional cover 14 for protection during transport. In a modification, the restraining member is solid and of reduced cross-section in the middle part.
