Abstract

861,599. Universal joints. COURTAULDS Ltd. May 1, 1958 [May 2, 1957], No. 13993/57. Class 80 (2). A universal joint between shafts 1, 2 comprises flexible sheet-metal rings 9 secured at their inner peripheries by welding, brazing, soldering or the like to collars 3 attached to the shafts and similarly secured by welding &c. at their outer peripheries to rigid rings 11 connected by a channel cross-sectioned ring 12 to form a torque transmitting tube. The collars 3 are attached to the shafts 1 by radially-inserted cotter pins 4. The rigid channel cross-sectioned ring 12 is secured to the rings 11 by bolts 13 which enable the ring 12 to be removed without disturbing the shafts 1, 2. The cotters 4 can then be with drawn and dismantlement of the joint completed. Set-screws carried radially by the collars 3 engage with lost-motion in holes (not shown) in the rings 11, so that should failure of one of the sheet-metal rings 9 occur, torque can still be transmitted through the joint. Alternatively, the collars 3 may be of square crosssection, to engage loosely in correspondinglyshaped holes in the rings 11 to obtain the same effect. The sheet-metal rings 9 may taper in cross-section or may be formed with ring-like waves. A number of sheet-metal rings may be connected together. Specifications 564,963, 733,885 and 763,258 are referred to.
