Abstract
854,080. Expansion joints. RAY, F. Jan. 27, 1959, No. 2926/59. Class 99(1). An annular, flexible plate for an expansion joint, e.g. for pipes, has a series of concentric corrugations in the surface thereof, the depth C of each corrugation being equal to RS/E where S is the stress selected for the corrugation, R is the radius of transverse curvature of the plate at the middle of the corrugation, when one edge of the plate is deflected axially with respect to the other edge thereof for a pre-determined distance within the elastic limit of the plate, and E is the coefficient of elasticity of the material of the plate. The corrugations are of different depths, the depths being least at the middle of the annular surface of the plate and gradually increasing toward the inner and outer edges of the annular surface. As shown, the joint comprises annular metal plates 1, 2, 3 and 4 welded together alternatively at the inner and outer edges thereof, the plates 1, 4 having flanges 5 which are secured to nipples 6 on flanges 7 adapted to be bolted to the ends of pipes in a piping system.
