Abstract

A heat-resistant electrically insulating composition contains at least 70% by weight of polyethylene which has been intimately admixed with a thermal degradation inhibitor and subjected to high energy ionizing radiation, the inhibitor comprising a combination of chlorinated resin or a butadiene-styrene copolymer with an anti-oxidant and carbon black. The chlorinated resin may be chlorinated diphenyl or chlorosulphonated polyethylene, and when such resins are used the composition may also contain antimony trioxide or zinc oxide. The anti-oxidant may be di-phenyl- or di-beta-naphthyl-p-phenylene-diamine or phenyl-alpha-naphthylamine. The composition may also include butyl rubber.
