Abstract

A paste of 1 part of carbon black and 1 to 9 parts of water is admixed with 100 parts of polyethylene per 10 to 150 parts of carbon black and subjected to high shear, e.g. in a Banbury mixer, at a temperature sufficient to flux the polyethylene and to separate and remove the water. Antioxidants such as thio bis (6-t-butyl-m-cresol) may also be present. The product may be used as a masterbatch for further compounding with polyethylene. The products find application as film, coatings and sheathings for wire and cable, as raincoats, garden-hose and ground covers, and as extruded pipe.
