Abstract

Curled chips of scrap titanium, zirconium or their alloys mixed with at least 40% of titanium, zirconium or their alloys in sponge, powder or granular form, are compressed into a solid compact. The process is used in the recovery of scrap and its conversion into molten metal for subsequent processing. The scrap is preferably in sheet form and is cut and bent into curled chips. Examples are given of the sizes of the chips. Between 40 and 60% of the chips mixed with the powdered or granular metal and possibly a small quantity of turning or drilling chips, are compacted at between 1000 and 2000 kg/sq. cm. The resulting bar is used as a self-consuming electrode in an electric arc vacuum furnace to produce molten metal. Examples are given of the bonding strength of the compacts.
