Abstract

1,180,332. Hot pressed TaC-NbC-C composites. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. April 1, 1968 [May 12, 1967], No. 15591/68. Heading C7A and C7D. A hot pressed composite of a solid solution of TaC-NbC-C is formed by hot pressing at 3050‹ C. and 3, 200 p. s. i. a mixture of graphite with a material selected from the class consisting of; (1) powdered TaC and NbC (2) a solid solution of TaC/NbC (3) powdered Ta/Nb (4) a solid solution of Ta/Nb The composite contains 54% volume graphite and 46% volume carbides the weight per cent ratio of NbC to TaC being in the range of 70-50%. This volume composition is equivalent to 20À6% weight graphite, 39.7% weight NbC and 39À7% weight TaC. In method (1) the Ta and Nb carbides and graphite are mixed together and hot pressed in graphite dies at 3050‹ C. and 3, 200 p.s. i. In method (2) the mixed TaC and NbC is hot pressed at 2950‹ C. and 1, 800 p.s. i., crushed, mixed with graphite and hot pressed as (1). In method (3) Ta, Nb and graphite powders are mixed together and hot pressed as (1). In. method (4) a 50/50 Ta/Nb alloy is formed by arc melting Ta and Nb scrap. The alloy was hydrided and crushed and mixed with graphite. Hot pressing was carried out as (1).
