A zirconium alloy comprises: - the balance, apart from insignificant amounts of O and Si, being Zr; and is made by melting and mixing source materials in which the Zr source contains up to 0.01% C the carbon necessary being added separately (e.g. as a powder and preferably as the carbide of Zr, Fe, Cr and/a Nb).
