Abstract

Metal powders or mixtures of a metal and a metal compound or a metal and a metalloid are granulated to improve their flow properti s by heating the powder above the melting temperature of the lowest melting component followed by crushing the sintered compact to form granules which have a lower density than the optimum pressed density necessary to attain the maximum sintered density. The powder mixture may be in the loose state, lightly packed or compacted prior to the heating step which is preferably effected at a temperature which is 0.4 to 0.7 times the absolute melting temperature of the highest melting component of the mixture. The following examples are given: (a) a mixture of 90% Ag/10% Pb is heated at 360 DEG C. in hydrogen and then crushed and screened to give a 70% recovery of 0.06-0.3 mm. granules; (b) an 85% Ag/10% Ni/5% Cd mixture, either loose powder or compacted, is heated at 490 DEG C. or 430 DEG C. in hydrogen and crushed and screened.
