852,969. Electric measuring systems. EVERSHED & VIGNOLES Ltd. Jan. 20, 1959 [Jan. 21, 1958], No. 2053/58. Class 40 (1). In apparatus for indicating the level of water in a boiler, of the type described in Specification 639,370, in which a torque proportional to the hydrostatic head in the boiler is applied to a pivoted member and is balanced by a counter-torque, the indication is corrected for variation of pressure inside the boiler. As shown, the hydrostatic head of water 2 in a boiler 1 is measured by a mercury manometer 3 which includes a magnet 8 floating on the surface of the mercury and exerting a turning force on a magnet 11 pivoted at 12. Angular deflection of the magnet 11 causes a contact 25 at the end of an arm 19 to connect a capacitor 36, which controls the potential on the grid of a triode 32, to the positive or negative terminal 28 or 29 of a D.C. supply. The anode current from triode 32 is fed to a coil 17, mounted on the arm 19, which co-operates with an electromagnet 15, the coil 16 of which is fed from a transducer 21 with current proportional to the pressure inside boiler 1, to exert a restoring torque on the magnet 11. Since the head of water is proportional to the product of the anode current and the current from pressure transducer 21, the anode current, which is indicated on a meter 23, represents the ratio of head and pressure, which is indicative of the level of the water.
