Abstract
942,033. Strain measuring devices. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd. May 27,1960 [May 29,1959], No.18372/59. Heading G1N. A strain measuring device comprises a resilient base 3, e.g. of foam rubber, faced with two sheets 4, 7, of, e.g. beryllium copper, with two pairs of matched electrical resistance strain gauges, e.g. of the foil type, with one (5, 6) of each pair mounted perpendicularly to each other on one face of one sheet 4 and the others, 8, 9 mounted parallel to each other between the other sheet 7 and the disc. The device may be mounted at one end of a cylindrical housing 2 through the wall of which extends a four-cored cable 11, whereby the strain gauges are connected in a Wheatstone's bridge circuit for indication of the strain. The parts are bonded together by an insulating substance 18. So that the gauges may be at approximately the same temperature an air passage 10 is provided which also is a conduit for the leads to gauges 8, 9; or the sheets 4, 7 may be connected by a body of high thermal conductivity. In use, the lower face of sheet 7 is stuck to the surface of the body of which the strain is to be measured.
