Abstract

1,261,775. Pressure transducers. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct.6, 1970 [Nov. 12, 19691, No. 55408/69. Heading G1N. A fluid-pressure transducer comprises a stainless steel tube 10, Fig. 1, with two equal axial slots 11 at one end dividing that end of the tube into two prongs 23, 24 the latter carrying a rectangular insulating board 14 with a silicon crystal strain gauge 12 in a transverse slot 13 at the level of the closed ends of slots 11. The tube 10 is joined by an internal tube 20 to a rubber tube 19 and is covered by a rubber balloon 21. When the external pressure exceeds the internal pressure, the balloon 21 is pressed against the tube 10 and flexes the prongs 23, 24 to strain the crystal 12, the consequent change in resistance being measured on leads 17, 18. An alternative construction is described. The device may be used for measuring the pressure of internal body fluids and its "zero" calibrated by increasing the pressure inside the tube 10 until the crystal is unstressed, when the external pressure is equal to the measured internal pressure.
