Abstract

The invention comprises dyes of formula: <FORM:0852689/IV (c)/1> where Ar is a benzene or naphthalene residue with OCH3 #sto the azo group and their metal complexes in which one metal ion is combined with two radicals of a complex-forming compound at least one of which is a residue of a dye of the above formula and the other is of another complex-forming coloured or colourless compound. They are made by conventional methods by coupling appropriate diazo compounds with 4-hydroxydiphenyl and, if desired, converting the product above or in admixture with other complex-forming monazo dyes into complexes containing one metal ion combined with one or two dye radicals and, if desired, treating them with complex-forming coloured or colourless compounds. Specified metals are those of atomic number 24-29, chromium and cobalt being preferred. The diazo components may contain substituents such as halogen atoms or nitro, acylamino, carboxy, sulpho, carbonamido and sulphonamido groups. The dyes colour wool, silk, casein wool, leather and poly-amide and -urethane fibres. They may also be used to colour organic solutions and plastic masses e.g. varnishes such as cellulose ester varnish, articles of cellulose esters and ethers, plastics, synthetic resins and for spin dyeing acetate silk or other synthetic fibres. Examples are provided of the preparation of the dyes and their use in dyeing wool in red, brown, blue and grey shades from a weakly acid bath.
